Eww.. I just looked at teh picture a little longer and noticed that his beard is like under his chin. It looks as though he wasn't really sure if he wanted facial hair, so he decided that the neck was best.
I can't say I approve of his choice of facial hair, but keep in mind this picture was taken sometime during the 1870's when electric razors didn't exist. I imagine that it would be quite scary to use a straight old fashioned razor on your neck.
By the way, for those of you who are wondering, Rev. Charles Spurr is the man who planted my church back in 1870. He was also instrumental in planting several other churches during his day, most of which are still around and doing well.
Thus, he is my hero (and in great need of a stylist).

I have to say that he looks quite gross. I don't approve of his look.
